What is the Victorian Government COVID-19 Rental Relief Grant?

The Grant is a payment of up to $3,000 available to Victorian tenants who have lost income as a result of the COVID-19 health emergency and who are experiencing rental hardship by paying more than 30% of their income in rent.

The Victorian Government has extended the operation of the grant to 28 March 2021, increased the maximum grant to $3,000 and the savings threshold has been increased to $10,000.

What is the purpose of the Grant?

The grant provides direct financial support to renters by making a contribution towards the cost of their rent directly to their landlord on their behalf. The payment is based on the rent the tenant is liable to pay after negotiating a rent reduction (External link) with their landlord.

Who is eligible for the Grant?

The Grant is available to Victorians who are able to prove a renting arrangement, and who are experiencing rental stress due to a loss of income caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eligibility (External link) may include multiple single applicants who house share and are listed on the tenancy agreement, non-citizen renters, community housing rental agreements, rooming houses or residency in a caravan park where the caravan or mobile home is the primary residence and international students (External link) whose income has been affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic while in Australia.

The Victorian Government grant announcement made on 15 April 2020 also included a temporary ban on evictions except in some circumstances, a temporary freeze on rents, land tax relief for landlords and the rental relief grant.
